Built on data. Driven by belief.
The Aurum Foundation was founded on a simple but urgent observation: Florida's students graduate at high rates — and enroll in college at far lower ones. We exist to close that gap.

Dr. Claudine McLaren
Ph.D., Higher Education and Policy Studies
Dr. Claudine McLaren has spent much of her adult life in service to youth and young adults, guiding their personal development and supporting their education both in and out of the classroom. She holds a Ph.D. in Higher Education and Policy Studies and an M.A. in Applied Sociology, both from the University of Central Florida, and a B.A. in Sociology from the University of Louisville. Grounded in this academic foundation, she has partnered with national and campus organizations to design and implement innovative policies, programs, and practices that foster a college-going culture among pre-collegiate students and promote undergraduate student success.
After fifteen years of direct student engagement, Dr. McLaren's work now centers on two goals: preparing future college students for the transition into higher education, and researching the institutional factors, faculty and staff practices, and learning conditions that build a college culture where undergraduate students can thrive once they arrive. Both are driven by the same conviction that has guided her entire career: every promising student deserves real support in navigating the challenges and opportunities college presents.
That conviction is what led her to establish The Aurum Foundation. Dr. McLaren lives by the principle that 'to whom much is given, much is required.' She has brought that ethic home — drawing on her experience designing college exploration and engagement programs to give high school students the right information, exposure, and relationships for continued success.
"Every promising student deserves real support in navigating the challenges and opportunities college presents. That conviction is what led me to found The Aurum Foundation."
Why The Aurum Foundation exists
Our mission
The Aurum Foundation equips students from schools in communities historically excluded from publicly funded higher education with the knowledge, relationships, and confidence to: see college as reachable; apply; thrive academically and socially; and graduate.
Our vision
A Greater Orlando where every student, no matter the zip code they grow up in, understands the full range of postsecondary education open to them and exercises the freedom, the agency, and the resources to go as far as they choose.
Relationship-first
We believe sustained, trusted relationships are the mechanism through which structural barriers are overcome — not one-time interventions.
Evidence-grounded
Every program element is designed around what the research says works. We measure, we learn, and we adjust.
Complementary by design
We do not duplicate what others do well. We operate at the specific junction — between graduation and enrollment — where sustained support is most absent.
Student-centered
Students are not recipients of our work. They are the reason for it, and their voices shape how we do it.
How we are structured
The Aurum Foundation, Inc. is a Florida nonprofit corporation and federally recognized 501(c)(3) public charity. We are governed by a founding board of directors committed to fiduciary responsibility, programmatic integrity, and community accountability.
Our founding board brings together expertise in education, law, finance, and community organizing. Board member bios will be published as the organization completes its initial governance formation.
